SONAR (Sound Navigation and Ranging)

Friends, we use our sense organs to discover the things around us but if we have to measure the depth of sea or ocean then there we use a technique known as SONAR. Today, In this post we will discuss about it.

As we use RADAR to find out the things in sky like the Planes, Missiles etc, we use SONAR (Sound Navigation and Ranging) to find things inside the sea or ocean where we use Sound Waves instead of Radio Waves and detect the things inside the deep water, the depth of sea, object distances, enemy's submarine etc. SONAR is a very useful technique and it's interesting that animals like bat and whale also use sound waves to find out the distance of an object and that's why bats can fly in very dark. They emit sound waves and receive the reflected sound waves from any object and that tells the bat about the obstacles in their way. We use sound waves under water because they perform better as compare to radio waves and cover a long distance range and attenuation also becomes very less. The frequency of sound waves, we use, is very low. So, we use it easily under water for long distances. We have developed the SONAR system to find out the depth of sea, to find out the residue of any sinned ship etc.

SONAR is of basically two types. Active SONAR and Passive SONAR. In active SONAR, we send a cluster of sound waves from which some waves come back after reflecting from any obstacle. From which, we can measure the distance because we know the speed of sound and we have the time taken by the wave to go and come back after reflection. In some cases, we use passive type of SONAR where we don't have any transmitter but we only receive signals which come from any source and if you have multiple receivers then you can find out the location of the object by triangulation. The range of SONAR is very high as we can cover the 80% of all the ocean by only four locations. Actually, we have to choose between the better range and the better resolution. Like, if you use a high frequency signal then it's range will be less but the location will be more accurate. Hi-Tech systems can tell the size and shape of the object along with it's location. If you want a better range, You have to use low frequency sound waves but the resolution will be less in that case. Similar system we use in Ultrasonography where we use sound waves for projecting the image of our inside body. We also feel the reflection of sound waves in our real life in hilly areas in the form of an Echo.
